Announced since the Tokyo Game Show 2007, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was a highly anticipated episode by fans, eager to learn more about the past of the series and the story of three heroes discovered in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts II. After an episode on Nintendo DS which did not really unanimous, what can we expect from this new title for PSP ?
Birth By Sleep takes us back a few years ago, long before Sora obtains the Keyblade. At that time, there are many masters of the Keyblade, a weapon like a key and with mysterious powers. We follow the saga of Terra, Ventus, and Aqua, three apprentices who take different paths, but united by friendship and a common goal: finding Master Xehanort and his apprentice.
This way of cutting history allows us to play for the first time with three different heroes, with their own characteristics and their own stories. The game offers a greater diversity, a way to satisfy the desires of each, depending on your preferences: a powerful character, or a faster character or a woman ! The tradition of the series is preserved: your characters travel to different worlds from the magical universe of Disney, while having a personal story that tends to grow and become more intense. Besides their differences in combat, each character stands out for his character, his beliefs, his personality.
While 358/2 Days took back much of the worlds already used in previous episodes, Birth by Sleep innovate. Most Disney worlds are indeed new, and even when it comes to worlds known, it is a new experience for us. For example, Neverland, Disney Castle and its town like amusement park, or the Olympus Coliseum. Don't forget one of the original universe very popular with fans, the Radiant Garden, a chance to discover its glory days.
The worlds are many and quite large for the capacity offered by a portable console. With the exception of the world "Mysterious Tower" which unfortunately is limited to two small maps, many areas are visited in each world, and spread between different scenarios. The three heroes are moving in the same worlds, but the areas covered are sometimes different, which reducing the fear of repetition which one could expect by visiting three times in the same universe. Also, each hero doesn't always meet the same characters, which gives us different perspectives on history. However, having divided the story has some drawbacks, sometimes we've got the impression of having spent a few minutes in a world with a character. Others worlds as Destiny Islands are also glimpses briefly, time for a simple scene, too short to allow us to assess its content.
Regarding graphics, one thing is certain, Square Enix overcomes fully the capacity of the PSP. After Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII or Dissidia, Birth By Sleep is still the standard. The numerous images and videos revealed since the announcement of the game already allowed to get an idea of the quality of the title, but the final result is pretty impressive. The graphics are simply amazing for a portable game, it's like an episode on PlayStation 2.
The scenes are wonderful, even if the DS episode was just as good on that side. But support UMD allows to include more, remembering the good times experienced on the old episodes. We find the traditional aspect of the series, very cartoon, which takes us back to "few" years back in the greatest masterpieces of Disney, but also in the most recent.
The same applies to the phases of exploration and fight, it's beautiful and colorful. The movements are fluid, with no real display problem, despite the wealth of visual effects in fights. Some slowdowns are still noteworthy, in combat or at the opening menu, for example, but nothing very disabling in itself.
Regarding the gameplay, as each new episode, the development team innovate while keeping the basics that made the success of the series. Diversity and fun are the watchwords of this new system. The spirit is the same: to carry out stunning attacks simply by pressing a few buttons.
The Command gauge, one of the major innovations of the game, adds vitality to the fighting, whether between changes in style and various final attacks. Everything is triggered automatically, and you can even influence the emergence of a style, for example, use a lightning attack will display the Style Thunderbolt. Techniques are numerous and can be improved through a system level and skill points, which offer more freedom to players to compose his battle menu (or Deck) according to their own tastes and preferences. Indeed, over the usual menu "Attack - Magic - Items" rediscovered with 358/2 Days. You choose yourself previously attacks and items you want to use in combat. You may prefer a character focus on Keyblade attacks, or instead opt for different magic at your disposal. Speaking of magic, the game continues to innovate and not only offers the usual Fire, Blizzard, or Thunder. Other attacks are directed towards the deterioration of state, such as the ability to poison your opponent, reducing their size or to sleep (the Final Fantasy influence is felt). The grip is natural and instinctive, but it is not always easy to choose their attacks via the directional buttons while taking care not to let the character without move.
Don't forget the Dimension-Link which allows to use the skills of the characters encountered during the adventure. The system assumes a good idea but, like the invocations of the previous episodes, the system doesn't show a significant benefit. The techniques are successful but apart the beauty of the eyes, the possibilities in fight are already numerous that we forget to use the D-Link. The Shoot Lock announced as an evolution of the system Lock-on is a little success, and demonstrates all his abilities against many enemies. Different Shoot Lock exist for each character, and can also be improved.
The episode DS had already started the trend of multi-player and Birth by Sleep continues the momentum. A world dedicated exclusively to this mode appears on the selection screen, the Arena Mirage. It offers multiple ways to enjoy the game with friends, either in cooperation, confrontation, or also via the mini-games available to Disney Town. Of course, you can play alone, even if the difficulty is at once higher. To play with friends, two options available to you: play locally (in the same room) or online via the application Adhoc Party of the PlayStation 3.
Regarding the camera, one of the flaws of the first episode, greatly improved with the release of the second. In Birth by Sleep, the camera is easily controlled using the L and R buttons, but it didn't put in the right place, especially when changing the target of a defeated enemy. We can perhaps regret that these buttons used at the same time to lock-on and Shoot Lock, which may seem a little confusing at first.
Secondly, regarding the life of the title, it will take between 12 and 15 hours per scenario, without addressing more than that opportunities attachments (all chests, items, skills etc.), which is still reasonable for a portable game. But the game is pretty linear because your path is often plotted in advance. You can always return at the end of each world to recover the remaining missing chests or to practise, as the previous episodes.
Regarding music, applaud the incredible work of the talented Yoko Shimomura. Unpublished or not, the pieces take us in this enchanted world in a way that would never stop playing. The new tracks are numerous, and the tracks were already known retouched which still brings a note of freshness to the title. But if we make a shade, it might be some pieces that at first listen may seem strange or inappropriate, but in the end we managed to dive into the magic of the place.
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is the height of previous main episodes of the series. Tetsuya Nomura considers itself as an episode 0, an aspect confirmed by the quality of title but also by the many recent additions to the game.
